For thirty years, the pitch for independent front suspension has been the same: better on-road manners, less unsprung weight, a ride quality that doesn't beat up the driver on the two hundred miles of highway before the trailhead even starts. None of that is wrong. It's also not the question that matters once the pavement ends.
Articulation is the metric IFS can't win. A solid axle lets both wheels stay planted across a diagonal obstacle because the axle itself pivots as a unit — there's no strut tower dictating how far a wheel can travel before geometry runs out. Independent setups hit their travel limit sooner, and when they do, the tire leaves the ground. That's not a hypothetical. It's the difference between a rig that crawls a ledge cleanly and one that needs a locker doing overtime to compensate for a wheel in the air.
What the spec sheet doesn't show
Manufacturers aren't lying when they publish wheel travel numbers for IFS platforms — the numbers are often larger than what a comparable solid-axle setup delivers. But wheel travel and usable articulation are not the same measurement, and the gap between them is where most of the marketing lives. A solid axle's travel is almost entirely usable articulation. An independent setup's travel includes compression the suspension will use on-road, long before it's ever asked to hang a wheel off a rock ledge.

This isn't an argument for abandoning IFS. For the vehicle that spends 95% of its life on pavement and occasionally sees a forest service road, independent suspension is the correct engineering choice, full stop — nobody's daily-driving a solid-axle truck for the on-road manners. The argument is narrower than that: for builds where the trail is the point, not the occasional detour, the industry's wholesale move to IFS platforms has quietly made the vehicles worse at the one thing their buyers actually care about.
Travel comparison — mid-size platforms, as tested
The aftermarket has already priced this trade-off. Long-travel IFS kits exist specifically to claw back the articulation the factory geometry gives up, and they're not cheap — often costing more than a comparable solid-axle swap would, to get partway back to where a solid axle starts. That's not an accident of the market. It's the market quietly correcting a decision made in a product planning meeting that had nothing to do with what happens off-pavement.
None of this means solid axles are coming back as the default. They won't, because the volume buyer for these platforms isn't buying for the trail. But the enthusiast segment — the one actually reading a publication like this one — deserves a more honest framing than "IFS is simply better." It's better at a specific job. Off the pavement, that job isn't the one that matters.
